When Philip II moved his Court from Toledo to Madrid in 1561, it was no more than a little village with excellent hunting grounds and a royal lodge. Madrid has come a long way from those early days, and today we are more likely to copy los Madrilenos and sit in the famous Plaza del Sol or Plaza Mayor to soak up the relaxed and lively mood with some tapas and vino.

Madrid also offers beautiful buildings, its old historical quarter with its overhanging wrought iron balconies, art, theatres, music, good restaurants and bars in a great atmosphere, the lovely Park of El Retiro with its boating lake, the Sunday Flea Market for shopping.

During this week in Madrid we explore the City, the famous Rastro Flea Market, El Prado Museum, world renowned for its art collection, the magnificent Royal Palace, where one of Queen Victoria’s grandchildren lived as Queen of Spain, and, of course, enjoy the tapas and vino. We also have a day’s excursion to Toledo and Segovia.
